Moving yourself? These are

six critical questions to ask

yourself before doing so.

1. Can I get good dependable help that would definitely show up on move day, family, friends, co-workers, or neighbor? (preferable male help)
   
   
2. Would they be able to do heavy lifting for extended periods of time, two, three, four hours or more (depending on size of move)?
   
   
3. How difficult is the place you are moving from and going to?
   
   
4. Are there a lot of steps?
   
   
5. Is it a long walk to and from apartment/house?
   
   
6. Would you or someone helping you be able to drive a rental truck (if you use one)?
   
   These are only some of the questions to think about before moving yourself.

Some people (your moving help) may actually show up and start helping you move, but could get hurt if not experienced with heavy lifting or even get too tired to finish helping you move. If you plan on moving yourself, and you get stood up by friends or family on move day, you would end up with an emergency move, which could be a nightmare in broad daylight (try to move a day or two before deadline). So unless it’s a small move, you are sure you can do by yourself or with very little help, you may have to call movers.

Moving a piano? This is information you should know about how you may be charged. If you are going to have a piano moved this is how some movers charge. Some may charge by the hour, others may charge a flat rate (set price) based on the degree of difficulty in moving the piano. Steps up or down at pickup/drop off, you may have to pay for that, up or down any hilly area or across grass, these conditions can determine your price. You should have all this information when you call in addition to what type of piano you are moving, grand, baby grand, upright grand, upright, spinet, or console piano, some may even need the height, width, and length, also address where you are moving piano from, and going to along with pickup and drop off conditions as stated above. Try to know all of this information before you call. (keep this in mind). Trying to get rid of a piano could be very difficult and expensive, so before you accept a “free” or cheap piano from anyone, think about when it’s time to move it, or get rid of it (expensive plus difficult).

Moving one item or a very small move? This is a tip about one item or small moves. Since most movers charge by the hour some customer aren’t aware that their movers who don’t charge hourly, which is better for one item or small moves, they are charged per item (itemized) or a flat rate set price for one or more items. A lot of customers don’t have the patience or time to call around a couple movers until they get a service that don’t charge hourly (but it might be worth it) or ask hourly mover if they have a flat rate (set price) for a small one or two item move, you can even try a delivery service.

Renting a moving truck? Rental trucks are usually abused; learn how to protect yourself, save money time and hassle. A little rental truck tip. Before taking delivery of your rental truck always check truck thoroughly for damage inside cab, upholstery soiled or torn etc. Also out side the truck body for damages, broken taillights, scratches or dents, before taking delivery, or driving off lot/rental depot, so you won’t have to pay for damages you did not do, on returning the truck, be sure to clean out the front (cab) and rear (packing area), and return with the same amount of gas you left with (usually a full tank), check gas before you take delivery of the truck. Hiring movers? This is a good question to ask movers, and two mistakes that customer’s unintentionally make when moving. Ask movers if you can get a written (fax, email or mail) guaranteed price quote that would not change (increase) on move day. (this could be difficult or not possible for some movers if they charge by the hour or by weight), based on your moving conditions, and the amount of items you have to move. These are two mistakes that customers unintentionally make when hiring movers, or moving themselves.

1. Underestimate how much stuff you have to move, you never know how much stuff you have until move day (unless it’s one or two items).
   
   
2. Underestimate the amount of time your move may take, because it took two and a half hours the last time, it might not be the same this time. You might have bought new things or moving to a more difficult location. Always estimate for a longer move time to be on the safe side unless is just one or two items or a very small move.

Having furniture or appliance delivered? This is something you should know about delivery services. Delivery services usually don’t perform as much services as movers do, some may just deliver the merchandise to your front door, yard, garage, or maybe just inside your house/ apartment door. You may still have to call movers to set up or move your furniture/appliances within your place. Where as movers (not all) should set up and place any items they move, be sure to confirm this when you book or set up your move or delivery, know what kind of service you would be getting. Another important thing to remember is whenever calling movers or delivery service to pickup item or items of furniture from department stores, private homes, or anywhere else, if you are not going to be at pickup location, be careful of the moving service you call, make sure it is a legitimate service, who will deliver you stuff to you after picking it up. If you are not sure, go along with movers or have someone there to ensure pickup and delivery goes ok. Whenever you are buying large furniture or appliances you should always check, and try to determine if it will fit through, doors, corridors, stairways, tight corners, and especially in elevators, before purchasing it. No fit appliances/furniture happens quite often and it can ruin your day and may cost you another delivery or moving fee.

Furniture too large to get into your new place or elevator on move day? You’ve got a real problem.! This is a (prearranged) backup plan for no fit furniture on move day. A backup plan for furniture or items that cannot get into your place (too large) on move day, could be to ask your movers to move item to another prearranged (before move day) location, maybe a friend or family place, garage, basement, or shed, where you can later decide if you should try to sell or give it away if it’s not too valuable to do so, or you can disperse of it legally at a dump site or take to a thrift store (call first) Goodwill, Salvation army, or any other charitable organization that accept this kind of donations. There are also services that would take apart your furniture just enough to get it through or into your place and put it back together once it’s where you want it.
